Koenji underpass: wrong material
Stood in the Koenji underpass for one minute at 10:15. Sunday, almost no foot traffic. One bicycle came through from the other side.
The reverb is 0.8 to 1.0 seconds. Concrete floor, concrete walls. The sound returns hard and fast, no warmth. The bicycle left a frequency trace that stayed in the tunnel for two or three seconds after it had gone. That part was interesting. The rest was not what I needed.
I was checking whether this space could serve as a field recording analog to the brick vault in tokio-wohnbogen-1955. It cannot. Brick holds the sound differently. Longer decay, warmer frequency distribution, a texture in the reverb itself. Concrete gives it back immediately and cleanly. Not wrong, just the wrong material for this particular work.
Hibiya Okuroji before 07:00 on a weekday is still the candidate. The original arches, the brick.
